Today, with the development of fast-paced technology, big and numerous data plays a vital role in applications of various industries in our society. BPOs, telecoms, healthcare, semi-conductors are some of the many sectors that are processing big data, industrial applications, and data centers that always need to be up and running 24/7. Even a one minute downtime could cost hundreds of thousands of pesos in losses with these demanding operations. The challenging solution to that is the Galaxy VM UPS by Schneider Electric, which can provide up to 99% energy efficiency and reliable power protection for every situation.
The Galaxy VM UPS, a new three-phase UPS that provides power protection as well as maximum efficiency. It uses an innovative, patent pending power topology that improves reliability by reducing stress on its active components. Also, the Galaxy VM reduces energy costs by its ECOnversion mode, another innovative 99% efficiency that harmonically correct the inputs while combining the advantages of double-conversion on-line.
Operations of companies in the Philippines are vulnerable to power outages and fluctuations, problems in energy production and distribution is also a deterrent. Aside from these critical power systems, our country is often stuck by super typhoons and earthquakes that could lead to power interruptions. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a necessity for these data centers so that round-the-clock operations and business continuity is guaranteed.
Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, recently unveiled the new Galaxy VM. Additionally, the Galaxy VM offers flexible energy storage solutions with swappable modular battery and fans that are replaceable without the need to go through maintenance bypass, therefore increasing availability and load protection.
Last May 22nd, 2015 at the South Forbes Room of The Intercontinental Hotel in Makati, Schneider Electric held a Media Launch for Galaxy VM. Presenting to the media about the high-efficiency of Galaxy VM were Mr. Doy Santos, Country IT Business Unit Head of Schneider Electric Philippines and Mr. Yam Hong, Business Development Manager – East Asia Critical Power and Cooling Services both of Schneider Electric. “Data Centers are especially vulnerable here in the Philippines because of the increased possibility of fluctuations and outages,” said Doy Santos. “Schneider Electric’s extensive experience in reliable power protection design is ingrained and culminated in the Galaxy VM. It solves major concerns in the IT field by seeing to it uninterrupted and effective power, as well as cutting down energy expenditure and its associated costs,” he enthused.
Mr. Hong discussed some specifications of Galaxy VM listed below:
- Ease of installation
- Energy storage flexibility
- Integration into your electrical network
- Energy and cost savings in real terms
- Integration into your facility infrastructure
- High-efficiency operation modes and others.
Before the program ended, a Q and A was opened on the discussion table for media representatives. Here are some of the information that was gathered:
All industries in the Philippines will benefit a lot from Galaxy VM, but mostly highly relevant to industries like BPO, Healthcare, Telecoms, Data Centers, Semi-conductors and the likes.
Potential losses that these industries could occur from power outages would mean a lot. According to studies, one minute of downtime will cost more than hundred thousand pesos. In a country wherein power outages could last for more than an hour, those costs could easily go up to the millions. Aside from the financial costs, the damage to the reputation of the company is potentially irreparable.
Galaxy VM can provide back-up power for an average-sized data center in case of power outage. Depending on the load requirements per business, its back-up time is between 15 minutes up to two hours (or longer depending on the number of batteries.)
Galaxy VM standard setup would only require a minimum room space of less than 1 sqm.
Since most BPO and IT companies are constantly transferring operations, Galaxy VM can be move around since it has removable I/O cabinets and built-in caster wheels. Schneider Electric can assist in migration with the help of their certified Field Service Engineers making the transferring of UPS easier.
Now that the Galaxy VM is in the country, companies may take away the worries of power interruption in its very core of operations. According to Mr. Doy Santos, their system has a projected 2-3 years return on investment if the power rates don’t fluctuate too wildly from the average cost of PhP10 per kilowatt hour, and that’s what makes it a plus factor in acquiring a Galaxy VM.
